A Hayward man has been arrested and detained by the Orinda Police Department after he was seen fleeing from the scene of an attempted burglary. Witnesses placed an anonymous call to the OPD after the suspect was seen running from a residential home. The homeowner said she heard footsteps inside her house and upon further investigation, gained visual contact with the intruder. He made a run from it, entered his car and sped off.
Officers were given a description of the suspect and his vehicle. He was spotted shortly thereafter. Police officials said they attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver failed to comply. The suspect reportedly drove onto a local freeway and led squad cars on a high speed chase. His car collided with at least two others near a tunnel on Highway 24. Two people were injured during the crash and were transported to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. They have since been released.
The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was taken down by law enforcement officials within several minutes. Defendant Brian Battles was handcuffed and transported to the Martinez Jail for booking. He was charged with felony evasion, reckless driving, attempted burglary, and possession of stolen property. The jailer did not immediately release bail information but it is believed Battles’ bail was set between $50,000 and $100,000.
Should the defendant wish to move forward with hiring a Martinez Jail bondsman his cost will be 10% of that amount. A payment plan may be available if he is able to produce a cosigner who has good credit. Battles is scheduled to be arraigned later this month.
